Tomosynthesis

Tomosynthesis mammography, also known as 3D mammography, is a state-of-the-art imaging technique that provides a more detailed view of the breast compared to standard 2D mammography. It is typically performed in addition to standard mammography imaging, with both 2D and 3D images used together to give a more comprehensive evaluation and improve the detection and characterization of breast tissue abnormalities. At our clinic, we use a new advanced tomosynthesis system that captures multiple low-dose X-ray images from different angles as it moves around the breast. These images are then reconstructed into thin “slices,” allowing radiologists to examine breast tissue layer by layer. This significantly reduces the effect of overlapping tissue, which can sometimes hide small abnormalities or create false positives on traditional mammograms. For patients, this means improved accuracy in detecting breast cancer at an earlier stage, fewer unnecessary call-backs, and a more comfortable, efficient screening experience overall.
