About the Exam
How Bone Density (BMD) supports diagnosis
A Bone Mineral Density (BMD) test, also known as a DEXA scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry), is a non-invasive imaging procedure used to measure the strength and density of bones. It helps diagnose osteoporosis, assess fracture risk, and monitor bone health over time. The test uses low-dose X-rays to evaluate bone density, typically in the spine, hip, or forearm, and is quick, painless, and safe. BMD testing is especially recommended for postmenopausal women, older adults, and individuals at risk of bone loss.
How to Prepare:
To prepare for your bone mineral density (BMD) test at Erin Diagnostic Imaging, please avoid taking calcium supplements for at least 24 hours before your appointment, unless otherwise directed by your healthcare provider. You should also wear comfortable clothing without metal, such as zippers or buttons, as metal can interfere with imaging.
If you have recently had a contrast study, such as a CT scan or barium exam, please inform the clinic, as you may need to wait before having your BMD test. Be sure to bring your requisition and health card to your appointment and arrive 10 minutes early for check-in and to fill out your questionnaire.
What Happens During my Bone Density (BMD):
During your bone mineral density (BMD) test at Erin Diagnostic Imaging, you will be asked to lie comfortably on an examination table while a specialized X-ray machine scans areas such as your lower spine and hips. The technologist will position you carefully to ensure accurate imaging and may place your legs on a support to help maintain proper alignment.
The scan is quick, painless, and non-invasive, using a very low dose of radiation to measure bone strength and density. You will need to remain still for a few minutes while the images are taken, but there is no discomfort during the procedure.
Once the exam is complete, you can resume your normal activities immediately. Your results will be analyzed by a radiologist and sent to your referring healthcare provider for review.
